What is corrugated?

Corrugated fiberboard or “combined board” consists of two main components: the liner and the medium. Both are made from a special type of heavy paper called containerboard. Linerboard is flat material, usually on the outer surfaces of the board, but on the inside for some structures, that adhere to the medium. The medium is the paper that is formed into an arch or flute on a single facer and glued between the liner board facings.

Corrugated Boxes Making Process

To understand what corrugated boxes are, you first need to understand how they are made. Made primarily from trees, which are a renewable resource, corrugated packaging is the most commonly recovered packaging material on the planet. It is manufactured sustainably from trees and old recovered corrugated containers, hovering around 90% over the past eight years and 96 percent in 2018 per Corrugated.org.

When corrugated is recycled, the old corrugated container (OCC) is discarded, sorted, compacted, and bald for space-efficient storage. These bales are then transferred to a paper mill, where they are then broken down and the slurry is put into a repuller, much like a large blender.

In repellent, they are agitated to form a mushy pulp of fiber and water. The contaminants are removed and the remaining fiber solution is poured onto a moving screen that allows the water to drain away, forming a continuous fiber mat. This mat is then pressed between rollers to remove any excess water.

The wet, continuous fiber is wound through a dryer where it contacts the heated surfaces of the drying cylinders at the top and bottom, removing any remaining moisture from the paper. Once this process is over, the paper is spun onto a large reel spool, where it is then separated and rolled into individual rolls, which are when the recycling process is completed. is believed. These paper rolls are then shipped to sheet feeders or corrugators, where they will be turned into corrugated sheets, and later into durable corrugated packaging.

Differences between Corrugated and Cardboard

A carton is made of thick paper stock or heavy paper pulp. This material is used to make a variety of products such as small containers, product packaging, and even structural supports for less rigid objects such as notepads, inserts that shape clothing items such as button-up shirts. Save from getting lost, and much more.

As a retailer, you can ship products in containers made of cardboard, but you are at risk when doing so because the contents offer little protection. Additional packaging material, such as bubble wrap, may also be required to protect your product during the shipping process.

Corrugated cartons are made of a few layers of material rather than just single sheet-like cardboard. The three layers of corrugated include an inner liner, an outer liner, and a medium that goes between the two, which is fluted. Corrugated is a flexible material that is also lightweight – an important consideration for those who ship significant numbers of packages.

These containers remain intact even when exposed to shock, moisture, and sudden temperature changes. While no container is invulnerable to extreme force or prolonged and harsh conditions, corrugated provides a high level of assurance that your products will move from your warehouse to their final destination in great shape.

Basics of corrugated

Now that you know the differences between corrugated and cardboard, we can get to the basics of corrugated. Several factors come into play when making a corrugated box. This is why they are so customizable.

Flute profile

The most common flutes used today are the A, B, C, E and F, with the A being the largest flute size. The size of the flute determines the thickness of the walls as well as the stacking strength of your corrugated box. An “A” flute is approximately 5 mm thick and is an ideal choice for products that require extra cushioning or extra strength for stacking. As you go through the B, C, E, and F flutes, the thickness decreases resulting in a thinner board.

Board type

There are four types of boards that can be used for corrugated boxes. The most common of which are single-wall and double-wall boards. There is also a single-faced board which is composed of a single sheet of liner glued to a sheet of corrugated medium. This style of board is typically sold in rolls and can be used to wrap around products for protection and cushioning. Single-wall board is when a sheet of corrugated medium is glued between two sheets of the liner. Single-wall is the most common type of board on the market and can be used for everything from shipping boxes to retail displays.

Double-wall occurs when two sheets of the corrugated medium are glued between three sheets of the liner. This board is typically used for heavy products or products that require a sturdy box for shipping.

And finally, triple-wall is when three sheets of the corrugated medium are glued between four sheets of the liner. This board is the strongest of all board styles and is often used for industrial parts or production bins.

Board grade

A corrugated board is classified as a Mullen or Edge Crush Test (ECT). These two board grades have very different applications. ECT measures how much stacking strength or pressure a box can withstand before being crushed. ECT board is a favorable choice if you are going to stack boxes on top of each other, whether on a pallet or warehouse shelf.
